You breathe your sweater and it’s damaging to your health: the danger of plastic microfibers
Synthetic clothes shed large amounts of microplastics, which are possibly dangerous for your health. It is documented in an overview report made up from hundreds of studies on plastic microfibers, compiled by the Plastic Soup Foundation. Aspirated microfibers could, for example, lead to chronic inflammations in the lungs, which, in their turn, can contribute to the development of cancer, cardiac disease, asthma and diabetes. The Dutch media outlet ‘Radar’ spoke with prof. dr. Barbro Melgert about what we as consumer can do and how the clothing industry needs to change.*
